Lei-Ti Campground, Batavia, NY

August 4-6, 2006

So we chose this campground about three hours from Lake George, and 40 miles from Niagara Falls.
We got roped into staying at this place for various reasons. Firstly, they required us to stay for two nights, since it was Friday. The drive was pretty relaxing. Since it was mostly 90 all the way, I could just enjoy the scenery. Of course, as on many highways in the Northeast, there was not much to see but a green blur of trees. But, then, unexpectedly, a break appears, a wide expanse opens, and you marvel at it all the more for its rarity.

A view of the wilderness.

Or of hay bales.

Batavia was the seat of the Holland Land Office when New York was still New Amsterdam. At least, I'm pretty sure it was Dutch first. We didn't do a lot in Batavia except take care of things like food and supplies.

I guess that in a lot of campgrounds, pull through sites are not the wooded, secluded, shady bowers which one might hope for as a camper. Instead, we got a parking space with full hookups right next to the lodge and laundry. This is actually a fair trade, I suppose. This campground is a popular spot for people who rent a space all summer long, every year. And during the weekend we stayed, they were having their annual Survivor Games. On Saturday afternoon, we were by their lake. We had brought down our folding chairs and cooler and were set up for a peaceful afternoon at the beach. Ian brought his acoustic guitar, so Z swam and frolicked with other kids while Ian played. Then all of a sudden they called for Survivor to start. But one team needed two more people. Guess who Brian volunteered to join.

I was hoping they would at least have similar challenges to those in the show. Imagine my disappointment when they called for a scavenger hunt. People were calling out possible items, so I figured they had done this before. And they had. By the time my team got back, everyone else was done. Apparently, veterans of the campground brought bags of miscellaneous stuff down to the beach knowing that this was an event. Oh well. I suppose it was kind of fun running around, but short lived. The next challenge started with a puzzle too. Ah! Torture to know!

We stayed an extra day here because Brian was sick. He wasn't completely comfortable with me driving. So we stayed. Niagara Falls could wait another day. The whole time Z was running around the playground or swimming. Most of the kids on these sites are very friendly. A nice change. She would go all day without a nap and pass out at 10 o'clock. So would I. Doesn't she look comfy?
